Senate

The IIT Act and Statutes declare the Senate of an IIT as an authority of the Institute and describe the composition and the functions of the Senate. The act says that the Director will be the ex-officio Chairman of the Senate, which will also include members on an ex-officio basis. The other members of the Senate include the Deputy Director, the Professors appointed or recognized as such by the Institute, 3 persons who are not employees of the Institute nominated by the Chairman of the Board, the Heads of Departments, the Librarian, the Wardens of the hostels by the way of rotation, the Workshop Superintendent and six members of the staff (appointed by the Chairman).


The Senate of the Institute has control and general regulation, and is responsible for the maintenance of standards of instruction, education and examination in the Institute. The Senate periodically reviews the academic activities of each Department in depth and takes a view on the efficacy of the Department. The successes and failures of each Department, its strengths and weaknesses are discussed in the Senate and their findings and specific suggestions are made available to both the Board of Governors and the Advisory Committee of the Council.
