Student Exchange Programmes


The student exchange program permits students of IIT Madras to visit Institutions in Germany, Switzerland and a few other countries. Also students from participating Universities will visit IIT Madras for specific course work or projects. The information given in this section may not be taken to imply that student exchange programs are a permanent feature.

DAAD Exchange Programme

The DAAD offers upto 100 "Sandwich-Model" scholarships to post-graduate students registered for a Masters degree at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
The "Sandwich-Model" for Masters students is a multi phased scheme in which candidates carry out their course work and research in India and Germany alternatively, under the supervision of a mentor from the respective Indian Institute of Technology as well as a mentor from a German Technical University (Technische Hochschule, Technische Universitaet ).
Candidates must be enrolled in the M.Tech programme, or in exceptional cases, highly recommended candidates in the M.S (Research) programme. They must be registered for course work at an IIT according to the regulations of that IIT.

Duration of the Pogramme

After successfully completing the course requirements, the students will follow the below program schedule abroad (the dates to be specified later)
  • A 4 - 6 week language course in Germany (if necessary, this can be followed by supplementary course parallel to work on research project).
  • 8 months research work for the Masters thesis carried out at a German university (including, where possible some weeks of practical training in German industry).

Eligibility Requirements for the DAAD Program

  1. 1. Degree / Status : Applicants must be Indian residents, and be M.Tech or M.S (Research) students (with CGPA no less than 8.0) currently enrolled in a Masters course at an Indian Institute of Technology.
  2. 2. Knowledge of German language : Standard of "Grundstufe I", upon commencement of scholarship. Compulsory language course will be arranged at the IITs prior to departure.
  3. 3. Age Limit : 32 yrs upon commencement of scholarship.

The application must specify the title of the Masters thesis, as of now, and include a draft of the envisaged research project in Germany (after discussion with the German mentor, these might need some modification, depending on their feasibility at the German University).
A detailed time and work schedule, planned out in consultation with the Indian and German mentors, has to be submitted later on, and only by the selected students.

Scholarship Benefits of the DAAD Programme

  • International travel costs from the home Institute to the place of study in Germany, and back.
  • Luggage allowance (for the out-bound journey : DM 300; for the reurn journey : DM 700).
  • Medical, accident and personal liability insurance.
  • 4 - 6 weeks intensive German language course in Germany (If necessary, followed by a supplementary course parallel to research)
  • Scholarship Stipend (DM 1,250/- p.m.)
  • Study and Research subsidy (Single payment of DM 700)

Deadline for Application Submission

The IITs will fix their own deadlines for receipt of applications, and will forward the completed applications of eligible students to the DAAD office in Delhi at
